Japanese Street Fashion: Lolita, Decora, Ganguro
“The term ‘Street Fashion’ is used to describe fashion where the wearer personally customizes the outfits by adopting a mixture of current and traditional trends. Such clothes are generally home-made with the use of material bought from the stores.”
That’s how Wikipedia describes Japanese Street Fashion. (:
Soo.. yes, you probably already knew, but I’m gonna write an article about Japanese Street Styles ! :D
Japanese street styles are commonly worn by young people on the streets in Tokyo who want to escape the strict society of Japan, I’m going to write more about the main styles, which are, Lolita, Decora and Ganguro.
Of course, all of these subcultures are located in Japan’s capital, otherwise known as Tokyo, home of over 12 MILLION people ..
That’s like .. all the people in Belgium, xD Tokyo can form it’s own country (:
Enough about Tokyo I think ! I’ll start writing abouut..
Lolita Fashion !
Gothic Lolita

hmm.. They’re so frilly ! xD
Lolita fashion is all about being feminine and as you can see, the style is very similar to the Victorian style . (most Lolita clothes are Victorian (; )
Gothic Lolita’s primary colors are black and white. This style contains a lot of skirts, petticoats, Mary Jane-shoes and lots and lots of lace.
Sometimes they also use small top-hats, parasols, alice bows, bows or lace headdresses. Sometimes even a bonnet!
(you can see the headdresses in the pictures! )
– > This is a small top hat as you can see (:
I think Namie Amuro wears one in her “Do Me More” clip, you can see it on youtube ^^
The main point of wearing lolita clothing is being elegant, cute, girly but in the case of gothic, still a little bit dark.
Gothic lolita wearers always go for the porcelain doll look, that’s, dark hair and a white/ flawless porcelain skin.
soo .. let’s carry on to the next lolita type (:
Sweet Lolita ! :D

This style is definitely the girliest of all the lolita sub-subcultures (:
They tend to have a realy fruity, fairytaleish theme and the colours are always pastels.
Most of the colours used are pinks and blues, this is also the most childish style of lolita !
Same as gothic lolita, people who wear sweet lolita have lots of parasols and bows.
There are maaany many more lolita subsubstyles so if you want to know more, check out these sites ! :D

Decora :D

hm well , I think you get the picture ,xD
Decora is all about being pink, childlike, and KAWAII ! :D
-> Which is the Japanese word for cute in case you don’t know (:
Many popular accessories are: striped stockings, hair clips (as many as you can put in your hair ), fuzzy boots, plastic toys, sticker tattoos, plushies and everything with Pickachu, hello kitty or plain pink items :D
The main ingredient of Decora/Dekora is Layering ! If you want to try this at home, make sure you have maaany many clothes you can layer together.
Preferably pink ! Also, put on more than one pair of socks . (:
In case you’d like to get the decora look, here’s the Wikihow page !

Ganguro !

Ganguro is a fashion trend that aims to be like the Californian valley girl !
It’s main features are, blonde or orange hair and a dark tanned skin .
Platform shoes, miniskirts and bright clothes are typical for ganguro types.
Shibuya and Ikebukuro are the center of this fashion style, more extreme types of the Ganguro are also seen there!
The extreme types are Manba or Yamanba, as you can see on the picture in the left. (:
Manba use bright colored lenses and concealer around their eyes for some edge, they also tend to paint their lips white, using the same concealer.
I find it pretty hard to see a Japanese girl in those pictures actually, xD It really is kind of edgy (:
I would reaaally like to go to Tokyo sometimes though ! It’d probably be a lot of fun to see so many different people walking on the streets!
Belgium is pretty boring on the aspect of clothing actually, xD I don’t think I ever saw someone Dekora while waiting on the bus, or Lolita in the shopping streets . (:
But it’s probably because they don’t sell those type of clothing in our shops..
Which style would you go for if you had to choose? (:
Quiz = I ended up with lolita,xD
Well, I hope you guys have fun, and enjoy your weekend !
Byeeeeeeeee ! :D
I hope you liked the post ^^

Is it a reaction to Western influences creating a gap in the generations?
